　　29 般若堂习禅制

　　 镜老人时有启发，法师年逾髭期。戒律精严，宗教并通。令公多参讲座，以利游方。命往国清禅寺，参学禅堂制度。至方广寺，习《法华经》。卅四、五岁二年，住国清寺，习经教，时至茅庵伴镜老人。

　　宣化偈曰：

　　十方聚会般若堂，

　　习学无为见性王。

　　选佛场中考功过，

　　谁得心空及第归。

　　Training under the Chan rules of the Prajna Hall

　　At that time, the venerable Master Ching gave instructions to the Master to develop his understanding. The Venerable Ching, who was over eighty years of age, maintained the moral code strictly, was conversant with the Teachings, and penetrated the practice of Ch’an meditation. He would often have the Master att the Sutra lectures. Since it was beneficial to visit other monasteries. He told the Master to go to Kuo Ch’ing Dhyana Monastery and participate in the Ch’an system of meditation practiced there. He also advised the Master to go to Fang Kuang (Expansive) monastery to study the Dharma Flower Sutra. From age thirty-four to thirty-five, the Master stayed at Kuo Ch’ing Monastery and studied the teachings of the Sutras. On occasion, he would visit the Venerable Master Ching at his hut.

　　The verse says:

　　The assembly of the ten directions gathers in the Prajna hall,

　　Practicing the unconditioned to see the supremacy of the nature.

　　Within the Buddha Selecting Hall they are tested for success.

　　Those who attain the mind’s emptiness are ranked as number one.

　　30 朝南海普陀山

　　 光绪元年乙亥，公三十六岁至高明寺，听敏曦法师讲《法华经》毕，与镜老人谈数夕，珍重而别。下山经雪窦，到岳林寺，听《弥陀经》毕。即渡海，朝普陀山，遍礼当时诸善知识，在法雨寺度岁。

　　宣化偈曰：

　　南海普陀落伽山，

　　观音化度水晶天。

　　善男信女来朝拜，

　　送至八百迎一千。

　　Making a pilgrimage to P’u T’o mountain

　　In the first year of the reign period Kuang Hsu, the cyclical year I Hai (1875), when the Master was thirty-six, he arrived at Kao Ming (Lofty Light) Monastery. After listening to Dharma Master Mim Hsi (clever brilliance) expound the Dharma Flower Sutra, he spent several evenings speaking with the venerable Master Hsi, and then, bidding him farewell, took his leave. Descing the mountain, he passed through Hsueh Tou and arrived at Yo Lin (Mountain Peak Grove) Monastery, where he listened to an explanation of the Amitabha Sutra. The Master then crossed the ocean to visit P’u T’o Mountain, where he bowed to all the Knowledgeable Advisors at the monasteries there. He spent New Year’s at Fa Yu ( Dharma Rain) Temple.

　　The verse says:

　　At Nan Hai, Potala Mountain Monastery,

　　Kuan Yin Bodhisattva crosses over beings at Celestial Crystal Palace.

　　Virtuous men and faithfull women come to bow in respect;

　　While eight hundred people are going over, a thousand are coming back.
